Light production in fireflies is due to a type of chemical reaction called bioluminescence, which, in fireflies, occurs in specialized light-emitting organs usually on the lower abdomen. The enzyme luciferase acts on luciferin in this organ to stimulate light emission. Genes coding for these substances have been inserted into many different organisms (see Luciferase - Applications). Luciferase is also used in forensics, and the enzyme has medical uses.

Wife of unpaid Kingfisher employee Manas Chakarvarti commits suicide

Wife of unpaid Kingfisher employee Manas Chakarvarti commits suicide

The Kingfisher staff-management fall out has just taken a tragic turn, with a report from Delhi that says a woman whose husband was on the ground staff of the struggling airline had killed herself, citing financial difficulty.

Susmita Chakarvarti (45), the wife of Manas Chakarvarti who works on the ground staff in Kingfisher Airlines, was found hanging from the ceiling in her DDA flat in south-west Delhi’s Manglapuri at around 1:30 pm.

She was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was declared brought dead.

The suicide note which was written in Bengali reportedly said that although she loved her husband and children very much, she was depressed because the family was in dire financial crisis.

Government approves Rs 130 crore to Indian Telephone Industries, ITI for employees' salaries

Government approves Rs 130 crore to Indian Telephone Industries, ITI for employees' salaries

The government today approved the financial assistance of Rs 130 crore to Indian Telephone Industries (ITI), a state-run sick company, to pay salaries to its employees.

"The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the financial assistance of Rs 130 crore in the form of grants-in-aid to ITI, for mitigating the hardship being faced by the company in paying salary to its employees for the next four months," Finance Minister P Chidambaram said.

He said the grant would ensure that the employees of the firm would get their salary in time and be motivated to work in the company, "which is on a slow and steady come back trail from being a sick company".

The direct beneficiaries will be 9,655 employees and their families.

The Bangalore-based company has incurred an accumulated loss of Rs 4,149 crore till the end of September 2011.

Due to a change in the technology preference in the market coupled with inadequate in-house infrastructure and R&D for catering to an exponential increase in wireless technology, ITI has not been able to compete on its own strength.

The high fixed costs along with the social obligation of running some of the non-profitable operations in the past, have resulted in the inability of the company to invest in R&D and new product lines, which could have helped the company to achieve better margins in this highly competitive market.

West Coast Paper soars on buzz International Paper, IP may buy the firm, Latest stock price of West Coast & Rama Newsprint

Shares of SK Bangur-controlled West Coast PaperBSE 7.18 % ended 7.2 per cent higher at Rs 70.15 on Monday following a late spurt on higher-than average volumes amid speculation that US-based International Paper (IP) is in advanced talks to buy out the company.

Bankers close to the deal said West Coast Paper is demanding a valuation of nine to ten times the current market price from IP, which last year acquired Andhra Paper MillsBSE 1.68 % for about $425 million (about Rs 1,900 crore then). IP in 2011 paid a 205 per cent premium for the promoters' stake in AP Paper.

This deal will also help Rama Newsprint

The steep valuations in the previous deal has sparked speculation that IP would pay a premium in this deal too. A section of the market feels IP is unlikely to pay such a sharp premium.
