Government clears 9.5% stake sale in NTPC (a Maharatna company), may get Rs 13,000 crore, Latest stock / share price

Government clears 9.5% stake sale in NTPC (a Maharatna company), may get Rs 13,000 crore, Latest stock / share price

The government on Thursday approved 9.5 per cent stake sale in state-run power producer NTPC, hoping to garner around Rs 13,000 crore.

"The cabinet committee on economic affairs has approved 9.5 per cent paid-up equity capital (about 78.33 crore shares) in NTPC out of government's shareholding of 84.50 per cent, a proposal by department of disinvestment, ministry of finance," sources said.

At the current market price, the stake sale is likely to fetch Rs 13,000 crore for the exchequer. However, it has failed to come out with any public offering in over seven months of 2012-13

The government has set a disinvestment target of Rs 30,000 crore for the current fiscal.

The government holds 84.5 per cent stake in NTPC, a Maharatna company. Post-disinvestment, the government stake would come down to 75 per cent, that would also help NTPC to comply with the minimum public shareholding norms.

Meanwhile, the government has decided to re-allocate three coal blocks that were taken away from NTPC for delay in the development of those mines, sources said.

With the re-allocation of coal blocks, the overall valuation of NTPC is expected to go up. This in turn would help the government to get higher returns from the proposed share sale.

NTPC became public with its initial public offering hitting the market in 2004. Thereafter in 2009, the government further diluted its stake in the company through Follow-on Public Offer (FPO).

The power generation company had reported a net profit of Rs 9,223.73 crore in the last fiscal as against Rs 9,102.59 crore in the 2010-11.

The market capitalisation of the company stood at 1,34,194.93 crore at the end of March 2012.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the deep depression would move west-southwest and station itself off the North Tamil Nadu coast and adjoining South Coastal Andhra Pradesh coast over the next two to three days.

The IMD said in its morning bulletin that the deep depression lay centred at over East-central Bay of Bengal, about 950 km East-northeast of Chennai, 600 km East-southeast of Visakhapatnam and 520 km Southeast of Paradip.

Savita Halappanavar's death : Thousands rally in support in Ireland, demanded the change in laws

Savita Halappanavar's death : Thousands rally in support in Ireland, demanded the change in laws

Thousands of people, upset over the tragic death of an Indian dentist, have held rallies and candle light vigils across Ireland demanding changes in the country’s draconian abortion laws.

“No more tragedies”, the placards of the protesters read in Dublin and Galway as they demanded the change in laws.

Savita Halappanavar, 31, died in an Irish hospital last month after doctors refused to terminate her pregnancy despite telling her that she was miscarrying.

She died of blood poisoning after spending three days in pain and agony.

The rally in Dublin yesterday saw large crowds march from the Garden of Remembrance at Parnell Square to Leinster House, where a candle-lit vigil and one minute silence was held, state broadcaster RTE News reported.

Irish police said over 6,000 people took part in the march, however organisers said the attendance figure was significantly higher.

Meanwhile, up to 1,000 people took part in a vigil for Halappanavar in Eyre Square in Galway, where a one minute silence was held in her memory at 5:20 p.m. (local time) yesterday.

Earlier, about 60 members of the Indian community gathered outside University Hospital Galway and held two minutes of silent prayer for her.

Events were also held in Ennis, Clonakility, Letterkenny, Kilkenny, Sligo, Limerick and Carlow while a vigil took place at the Irish embassy in London.

Ireland had said it will not be rushed into an immediate decision on right to abortion even as it assured India that an independent medical professional will assist the enquiry into the death of Halappanavar.

5 safest hatchbacks in India under Rs 5.5 lakhs - Maruti Suzuki A-star, Ford Figo, Maruti Suzuki Ritz, Honda Brio, Nissan Micra

5 safest hatchbacks in India under Rs 5.5 lakhs - Maruti Suzuki A-star, Ford Figo, Maruti Suzuki Ritz, Honda Brio, Nissan Micra

Here's a list of the safest hatchbacks below Rs 5.5 lakh available in the country. We're looking at airbags, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) as the parameters to judge their safety credentials.

Maruti Suzuki A-star

The A-star is Indian numero uno Maruti Suzuki's most competitive offering in the Indian hatchback segment. The pint-sized hatch sure does pack a punch though. The top end model, the ZXI Opt, is priced at an extremely frugal Rs 4.51 lakh and offers airbags, ABS and EBD, making it one of the cheapest and safest cars on Indian roads. The 1-litre engine returns 19kmpl which goes a long way towards it being wallet-friendly as well.

Ford Figo:

Another little hatch that's big on safety is American multinational car manufacturer Ford's solitary vehicle in the Indian hatchback market. The 1.2-litre Duratec Titanium variant is at the pinnacle of the list of variants and it's priced at a prudent Rs 5.02 lakh. It returns approximately 17kmpl which isn't too shabby at all.

Maruti Suzuki Ritz:

This mid-range hatchback is Maruti Suzuki's second product with an adequate number of safety features enabling it to feature on this list. The Ritz is slightly bigger than the others on this list, and that's reflected in its comparatively higher price. The Ritz ZXI is top dog in terms of the car's internal hierarchy, and costs a fairly economical Rs 5.23 lakh. The Ritz also boasts of a 1.2-litre engine and will give you 17 kilometres to the litre, a range that rates decently well in this segment.

Honda Brio:

Japanese car maker Honda's petite Brio ticks all the right safety boxes. One of the smallest cars on this list, its highest rated V MT variant costs Rs 5.24 lakh and for its 1.2-litre engine, Honda claims 18.4kmpl, a good return for a car at that price.

Nissan Micra:

Japanese car maker Nissan's Micra has been making waves in the Indian hatchback segment. The top end XV variant comes equipped with the prerequisite ABS, EBD and a single airbag (unlike the dual airbags in all the other cars in this list). It is the most expensive of cars on this list at Rs 5.51 lakh.
